Crystal Cat Litter

crystal cat litter

Crystal Cat Litter is actually made from silica gel. It comes in beaded form as well as irregularly shaped forms depending on the brand. It has the highest absorbency among all cat litters and its odor control ability is also highly appreciated by cat owners.

However, somehow cat lover’s opinions about crystal cat litter are divided.

Some cat owners praise the crystal cat litter for it’s high absorbency. A mere 4-5 lbs of the litter can hold urine from one cat for up to a month as compared to the clay type of litter which would need almost 20-30 lbs to do likewise. This makes it highly convenient for the cat owners, as you would only need to change the litter box only once a month.

There are the other groups of cat owners who simply dislike using crystal cat litter. One of the main reason cited was that the crystal litter gives them no warning when it become saturated and the next cat that uses the litter box would leave a puddle of the urine at the bottom of the litter box. The stench from these unabsorbed urine puddles can be overwhelming when left for a period of time before the cat owners become aware of the need to change the litter.

However, cat owners may love crystal cat litter for their convenience but cats are likely to see things from a different perspective. One thing for sure is that not all cats would adapt to the use of crystal litter very well. The tiny jagged crystalline particles can be hard on your cat’s soft and sensitive paws. They may still use it though given no choice but they may not be very happy about it.

This is exactly what happens when I switch over to the crystals cat litter. I like it very much because it’s clean, highly absorbent and there is hardly any tracking at all. It’s also dust free. However, 3 of my 6 cats do not like it at all and they show their protest by simply not using the litter box at all. They end up pooing and peeing everywhere else, the water basin, the toilet floor and even on my previous carpet in the living room!

But should your cats not mind the lumpy crystals, I would recommend using crystal cat litter
